Recently I was interviewed by Frock, Paper, Scissors – a Brisbane newspaper about Feng Shui tips for the Bedroom. Here is the result!

Bedroom Blues

We all know that sleep is the quintessential to looking beautiful and feeling awesome. But how many of us are getting the recommended amount of sleep to be mentally sharp, emotionally balanced and full of energy every day. Experts in health, psychology and interior design, Dr Eileen Heyne, Carolyn McCallum and James Hue give us the secrets to getting a good night’s sleep.

Doctor Eileen Heyne believes that sleep is vital for the functioning of the body from all points of view, “Without the regular 6-8 hours of sleep one’s health will gradually spiral downwards and you will end up unwell with suppression of the immune system, infections, tiredness and general misery and woes,” she says. According to the latest national MBF Healthwatch Survey, 51% of Australians say they are not getting enough sleep, while 46 % have been trying to get more sleep.

It was found Aussies blamed a range of factors that interfered with their sleep including full schedules, going to bed late, job stress, family issues such as having young children, and poor sleep patterns. However many of us don’t know that we can improve the quality of our sleep by just making a few simple changes to our bedroom.

James Luu, with a degree in psychology and currently studying interior design understands the importance of sleep, “You sleep for about a third of your lifetime,” he says, “so it is quite vital to ensure your bedroom expresses positive sleep vibes, and there are multitudes of ways to create this.” Dr Eileen Heyne agrees, “Creating an environment which is calm and peaceful for your rest period is vital for our physical and mental wellbeing,” she says.

Feng Shui expert Carolyn McCallum explains this concept using the two major aspects of Yin and Yang. Where Yang concerns activity and Yin applies to inactivity. She states that, “obviously bedrooms need to be as Yin as possible to ensure the cell rejuvenation can occur in the most supportive environment possible, bedrooms should be a place of rest and relaxation”.

Hints and tips are as follows:

Keep the bedroom uncluttered – That’s right, the constant pile of clothing on your floor where the only carpet visible is the narrow windy path from door to bed has to go!

Only two activities in the bedroom, sleeping and sex – This means keeping everything else out of your ‘sleeping chamber’ to avoid distraction, this includes eating so goasy on the ‘breakfast in bed’.

Laptops, desktops and TV’s are cast out – the lighting sends out bad non-sleeping signals!

Blinds or shutters – These are more appropriate than curtains as they manage to completely block the sun out! This helps ensure you wake up when you should wake up, rather than from the sun.

Pastel and pale wall colouring – if your walls are covered with fluro green or hot pink paint, its time to strike anew. Keep it personal with pale and pastel colouring, light saturation of colours is key!

Sustainability – Yes it’s that word again! The chemicals you are using in your bedroom is of prime importance to how you sleep. The scent that comes from these products changes your sleep patterns. Go for low VOC (volitale organic compounds), economically friendly and organic chermicals.

The south west corner of the bedroom is the ‘relationship’ corner and a portrait here helps support the couple. Otherwise, if you are single and looking for love, place a pair of mandarin ducks or a picture, painting or sculpture of a happy couple here to increase the likelihood of being lucky in love.

It is best not to sleep with your head next to a clock radio – instead put it on the other side of the room so you can still see it but the electric field it emanates will not harm you.

My clients often ask me how I got into Feng Shui SO here is a summary of my Feng Shui journey which started over 7 years ago.

It all began in 2004 (interestingly, the start of Period when my good friend and masseur Judy Smith suggested I get her friend, Melynda Munroe who was a Feng Shui Consultant, (coming up from Melbourne to stay with her) to do a consult. Judy knew I had put my house in Pennant Hills on the market and had bought another house in the neighbouring suburb of Cherrybrook. She suggested I get Melynda to have a look at my new house so any suggestions she had could be incorporated from the start of our residence there. I trusted Judy 100% so asked Melynda to come and look at the new property. I should note that the removalists had been booked for 3 days time and the house was 75% packed into boxes ready for the move when Melynda came to do her consultation. I knew nothing about Feng Shui at the time, other than it had something to do with energy in the home.

I picked Melynda up from Judy’s and we pulled up in front of the house. Straight away she commented that my husband had chosen this house (which was right). She could tell using her understanding of Form school that the energy of the house was predominantly male. She stood at the front door looking out into the street holding her Lopan (Chinese Feng Shui Compass) taking measurements. She wasn’t happy! There was a very large electrical tower to the left of the house about 50 metres away. I then took her on a tour of the home and she really disliked the energy within the home and asked if we could go to my other home so she could look at that. She did some calculations using all the occupants birth dates and also looked at where the stove was placed within the house. She basically advised against moving into the new home as my daughter (who was 3 years old at the time) had her personal energy located in the pool and she indicated there was a strong chance of her drowning in the pool. She also advised that my personal energy was located on the staircase and that there was no remedy for this. She said this meant it was likely I would be having surgery within 2 years. There was a myriad of other issues which she said needed to be remedied and even then the energy would not be all that supportive. She didn’t at all like the vibe in the new house and wanted to get out of there as quickly as possible. You can imaging how upsetting this was as we were all ready to move into our dream home. I took her back to my old house which she said was quite neutral and much better than the home we were about to move into. She strongly recommended that we take it off the market and put the new home on the market and sell it without moving into it. She suggested some improvements in our current house including moving the front door by 12 degrees and placing salt water cures, black and red mats at entrances and aloe vera plants in various rooms of the house to remedy the negative energy there. Now I know most people would have just moved into the new house regardless of the advice however I am not like most people. I believe that if you go to the effort of paying someone to come and do a consultation then you should follow through on their advice (I wish more of my clients held the same view). Luckily my husband agreed with this decision and we cancelled the removalists, unpacked the boxes, put the new house on the market (selling it for $20K more than we had bought it for), changed the angle of the front door by 12 degrees (cost $1500 and the builder thought we were nuts) and put the other remedies in place. A few months later Melynda ran a Basic Introduction to Feng Shui course which Judy encouraged me to attend. I jumped at the chance. The date of the course was 25 September 2004 and we covered so much information in this course that my mind overflowed – I wasn’t ready to do anything with the info at that stage (looking back on these notes the information presented was pure gold!). Unknowingly I launched my business on the very same date a few years later.

I read a few books and studied different philosophies including Chinese Medicine, Kinesiology, Reiki, Sacred Geometry, Mediumship and other Metaphysical subjects over the next few years. I also ended up leaving my husband and was granted a divorce. Whilst sorting through some old paperwork I found Melynda’s business card and rang her up to seek her advise about my upcoming Property settlement in December. She gave me some great advice which I used and I was successful in getting the outcome I had hoped for. I wanted to use part of the settlement money to fulfil my unrealised dreams. In January I enrolled in a Certificate IV in Feng Shui course through the Australian College of Environmental Studies (ACES). I cannot recommend this course highly enough. It is an excellent foundational course which trains you in so many essential components that you need to understand to be an effective Feng Shui Consultant. Unlike other courses it teaches you about Space Clearing, Geomancy, Environmental issues that can affect people’s health as well as teaching about core Business Principles. All of these components are crucial in helping clients and I use all of these aspects to some degree when completing a consultation. My teachers, Liz, Katina, Nicole and Raphael were all excellent at imparting their valuable skills and experiences that have continued to assist me when I consult all these years later. I already have a client that has commenced study with ACES due to my high recommendation of the course. I finished all subjects of the course with Distinctions and High Distinctions and my thirst for knowledge re this ancient art could not be quenched. I realised that a good Consultant also needs to have an in depth knowledge about their client’s Chinese Astrology. I had finally met a wonderful man and after a while he proposed on top of the Eiffel Tower whilst on our first (of many) overseas trips. Again I rang Melynda to ask about an auspicious date to get married which she supplied me with as I wanted this wedding to be my last! It occurred to me that it would be more beneficial for me to learn the art of Chinese Astrology and date selection myself rather than having to rely on Melynda every time there was an important occasion in my life. So I commenced study with the Australian Academy of Feng Shui under the brilliant teacher and now good friend, Vic Ketis. For two years I went through all the modules in the Chinese Astrology course 1 to 8 and enjoyed every second of my learning. Vic has such a wonderful in depth knowledge and the way he also ties in Western Astrology and Sacred Geometry principles in his teachings widens your perspective of Astrology in general.

Whilst completing this study I had started my business, Feng Shui Harmony and really enjoyed assisting clients create prosperity , abundance and wellbeing using the principles of Traditional Feng Shui and Chinese Astrology which originated in China many thousands of years ago. I decided to also give back to my profession and become a Board Member of the Association of Feng Shui consultants and enjoyed assisting the development of Feng Shui in Australia through my membership of that. I enjoyed working with Liz Wiggins who was President when I joined and who asked me to become Treasurer which I did. When she resigned as President to focus on selling Real Estate I stayed on as Treasurer but things just weren’t the same without her at the helm so I too resigned part way through my term as Treasurer but I am still an active member of the Association Áand uphold its Code of Ethics. I also decided to join the International Association of Feng Shui Consultants (Australian chapter) and attended both the AFSC and IFSA conferences in 2010. Obviously one of the perks of being a Feng Shui Consultant is you can activate your own prosperity quite well. I had moved from my previous home following the property settlement and purchased a new home in Westleigh with my new husband. Obviously I did a Pre-Purchase inspection on this home and it started with a 7/10 ranking but after a few minor changes – a wall added here and another one removed there, placement of simple remedies, water fountains and use of colours and furniture placement it has achieved a very high ranking of 9/10 in terms of Feng Shui. As a result I was very successful in the raffles at both conferences where I picked up 4 prizes (I bought 12 tickets) including the major prize at the AFSC conference and 2 prizes (I bought 10 tickets) including the major prize at the IFSC conference. I also won two major prizes in the coming months in 2 separate competitions which I had only put one entry each in for. So in 8 months I had won 8 prizes (4 of them major prizes!) which was simply superb. My husband has also achieved a lot in his career since I’ve activated his office using the principles of Feng Shui. The home we have created together is a very happy one and my children thrive in such a supportive, harmonious environment as a result.

Still I wanted to learn more so I studied Chinese Astrology with White Dragon Academy where the importance of harmonies and clashes were reinforced. I also studied with Grand Master Raymond Lo, who taught me all about I Ching Divination which was so fascinating. I was privileged to be in the class where he declared that Australia would have a hung parliament in the upcoming election. I really enjoyed learning from Grand Master Lo, coming from a teaching background myself, the way he structures his teachings in such a well formulated and thought out way makes such a challenging subject easier to understand. Despite already having the basic foundational level of Feng Shui required to consult I wanted to delve deeper and learn more formulas so I undertook more study with Grand Master Lo, successfully completing Feng Shui 1 and Feng Shui 2 with him in Perth. I also completed some online study with Master Lillian Too.

I really enjoyed implementing all that I had learnt with my clients homes and businesses and was achieving some great results. Still my thirst for more was unabated. There are so many formulas that can be applied in Feng Shui but due to family responsibilities I couldn’t take too much time to go overseas and study there. Amazingly I discovered that Melynda who had been the Personal Understudy of Master Liu for over 18 years had been granted permission from her Master to start teaching in Australia. I felt like my Feng Shui journey had come full circle and that I was going to be able to learn more of the intricacies of Feng Shui without having to go to China and study (like Melynda had to do). I have done a few courses with Melynda, specifically about Fire Placement in the home, fire as it relates to people living in the home, the influence of Period 8 energy, the influence of Annual Visiting energy and Tips for selling real estate.

I am also a volunteer for the IFSA assisting them whenever they require to run seminars and events in Sydney. I am helping with the upcoming International Feng Shui day on 28 January 2012. It is with the utmost delight that I am coordinating interested students to study with Melynda Munroe when she teaches in Sydney in April next year.

In so far as my favourite services – it is so hard to say. I particularly like conducting Space Clearing ceremonies as these recharge the energy in such a positive way for the buildings where they are conducted. I also really enjoy working on pre-purchase inspections and renovating or building plans as the advise provided on these reports can minimise issues from arising in the first place. My basic consults are the most popular and often it is just a case of placing a few remedies, a water fountain here or there and rearranging rooms – turning a bedroom into a study or vice versa that can make such a positive impact for the occupants.

I started my Feng Shui journey with Melynda who was my first Consultant and first teacher in 2004. I feel like I have now got the knowledge I need to be an outstanding Feng Shui consultant who can provide indepth analysis and more importantly solutions for all my clients to ensure they get the best result possible.

The turtle and its impact on my lifelong journey

Last week I went on a journey – yes it was a physical journey but it was also a journey that developed friendships, sought knowledge and reached a milestone in my spiritual journey of life. I travelled with a fellow consultant and friend to a 2 day workshop in Shepparton , Victoria which is where one of my teachers, Melynda Munroe is based and her Master, Master Liu visits to teach those with affinity the mysteries of Feng Shui. What I love about studying with Melynda and Master Liu is the tradition associated with their teachings. A lot of what they teach is not found in books, it is knowledge that Master Liu has been passed down orally from generation to generation within his lineage dating back thousands of years. I feel like I am getting to the very heart and soul of Feng Shui practice when hearing Melynda and Master Liu speak of the remedies and aspects involved in creating a supportive environment using Traditional methods of Feng Shui.

On the way down, driving through Australia’s magnificent countryside we passed a turtle on the side of the road, stretching his neck out, no doubt deciding whether he would be able to get across the road. I have never seen a turtle on the side of the road but didn’t think much more of it. We stopped at Berrima Patisserrie for brandy snaps and almond croissants then drove to Wagga Wagga to stay overnight. I stayed with a girlfriend who I had met nearly 12 years previously in Mother’s Group when I had my first son in January 2000. The next day we drove to Shepparton via Echuca where I had to visit a client who had kindly given me a large water fountain in appreciation for some assistance I had given her.

It should be noted that on the 10 hour drive there and the 10 hour drive back home, we never put the radio on once or listened to music. We spoke non-stop about Feng Shui and our separate journeys and our ups and down we had experienced on life’s road – a real Thelma and Louise type road trip (without Brad unfortunately).

The two day course like the one I attended previously in July was so worthwhile. We were sitting in the room when Master Liu finally told us the name of the School he had been teaching naming it Yin Yang School of Traditional Feng Shui. A very significant moment to share. We went deeper into material concerning the importance of balancing Yin and Yang, were given the key to understanding the Cosmic Breath of Period 8 specifically and all other Periods generally as well as some in depth analysis of Annual Flying Star Theory and remedies. One of the remedies concerned using one or two turtles as a means of supporting yourself in the immediate environment. Some more practical sessions were held on how to sell real estate quickly. As a group we climbed Mount Major which was a wonderful way to replicate the journey of our learning. We looked at the Dragon Veins of the surrounding area of Shepparton and analysed how the Chi flowed. Walking to the top of the mountain and then down the mountain signified our learning travels together as a group. We had all come so far in our understanding of Feng Shui.

The course finished late Friday afternoon and we drove to Wagga again to break the journey. We stopped at Albury at a Thai restaurant where we were met by another two turtles sitting on the reception area bar. The foundation of Flying Star Feng Shui is based on the Lo Shu or Magic Square which mythically was found on the back of a turtle’s shell. It is the centre of Flying Star theory so the turtle is a very important component of the mythology around Feng Shui. It seemed quite apt that we were seeing turtles but at this stage the message hadn’t resonated with either of us. It wasn’t until the next day driving from Wagga to Sydney that we nearly drove right over a turtle crossing the road. I had to swerve to miss it. We both then had an epiphany and realised that there was a message in all of this and we needed to find out what it meant. I recommended that my travelling companion Google Ted Andrews, author of the fabulous book “Animal Speak” to read about the meaning of the Turtle. She discovered the following:

“The turtle is one of the oldest reptiles and thus has one of the most ancient mythologies surrounding it. It has been a symbol for Mother earth, for longevity and for the awakening to heightened sensibilities. The shell is a symbol of heaven and the square underside is a symbol of earth. The turtle is an animal whose magic can help unite heaven and earth within your own life. The turtle is an invitation for the blessings of both heaven and earth. Because of its great age and its slow metabolism, the turtle is also associated with longevity, longlife and groundedness within life”. (2006, pg 363 – 366)

Wow – we could not get over the significance of this description and what it meant to us as Feng Shui Consultants. We talked non-stop all the way back to Sydney about it. We stopped again at Berrima where we had pre-ordered a dozen brandy snaps to take home for our family – they are the best brandy snaps ever! It was nice to get home to Sydney and reunite with our loved ones but our journey didn’t end there.

The next day we went to a Taoist temple with another Feng Shui teacher and were given the gift of Tao by a Taiwanese Master, Master Lin– a huge privilege and incredibly humbling experience. We took part in a ceremony which essentially burnt our names from the pages of hell and transferred them into the Book of Heaven which meant that we were afforded lifelong protection from Heaven. Protection is extremely important as Feng Shui consultants and also in my work as a Space Clearer as you often come into contact with people who are facing challenges and have negative energy which you need to ensure not to take on board. After the ceremony we had a beautifully and lovingly prepared vegetarian feast followed by an hour of study about Tao and we were taught about the Three Treasures which was educational to say the least.

A fitting way to end our week long journey and a week that I will no doubt look back upon as an important one on my journey though life. My next blog will be about my journey into Feng Shui and what I have learned along the way so stay tuned.

What’s been happening?

Well I’m off for a week down to the beautiful South Coast of NSW to relax and recharge my batteries after a busy quarter. I so enjoy spending time with my kids as well as getting that Feng Shui reading done that I always seem to have but never get time to do! I find it really helpful to revisit all of my notes on a regular basis as I’ve been studying since 2004 and each time I revisit notes I remember a pertinent point which assists me provide even better advice to my clients.

I’ve been busy in the last 3 months with quite a few consults involving looking at plans for renovations and providing advice on best placement of rooms and fire within the buildings to optimise the Feng Shui. I’ve also helped a lovely family feel more secure in their new home – read the testimonial from Lucinda of Rose Bay for her views on the effects of conducting the Space Clearing. A lot of pre-purchase inspections also completed – Spring is definitely in the air with lots of people looking at purchasing or renting new properties. For a small cost of $99 it is so worthwhile to have a Pre-Purchase inspection completed to ensure you are moving into a building that is going to support all the occupants. I’ve also finalised a brochure which I am getting printed ready for distribution at a local expo I am involved in for October. A few Chinese Astrology reports and the usual Basic and Comprehensive Feng Shui consultations have also kept me more than busy. I now also have as a donation option to the Fred Hollows Foundation which gives someone the gift of sight. I do this on behalf of any client who books a Basic or Comprehensive Consultation with me which in turn helps their Human luck or karma. I’ve also been helping a very well known Australian Feng Shui Consultant with editing some of her e-books which I’ve really enjoyed doing. Most exciting of all is I’ve been approached by a renowned Educational Institute to teach Feng Shui next year – stay tuned for more details.

Following my week’s holiday I am driving to Shepparton to check in with a previous client and to attend a Two Day workshops about Annual Visiting energy, tips on selling your home and the energy associated with Period 8 – the age we are currently in which lasts till 2024. I am very lucky that I have reconnected with my first Feng Shui Consultant and teacher Melynda Munroe and her teacher Master Liu from China who will also be teaching at this Workshop. This knowledge will add to my exisiting reportoire as a specialist Feng Shui consultant and will come in handy when I start preparing my annual reports for 2012 in November for all my clients.

I’ve recently started stocking the most beautiful water jugs which contain Five element crystals and rocks within them which have the effect of purifying the water placed in the jug and re-energising it so it vibrates pure joy! Water has never tasted so good or been so good for you when poured from these beautiful creations. Contact me if you are interested in purchasing one(around $200). I am investigating a few more additional products to stock for my clients and will no doubt have news of these in my next update which might be of interest as Xmas presents.

Don’t forget I offer 10% cash back of the cost of the service booked to anyone who recommends me to a client who books one of my services.

Here’s to an enjoyable rest of the year.
