Most people think the lives of Feng Shui Consultant’s must be a breeze as their houses are perfectly Feng Shui’d! As previously explained, there are three lucks – Human, Heaven and Earth – that make up your life and impact on what happens in that life. Human Luck relates to your karma and how you treat others, Earth Luck relates to Feng Shui and how you manipulate your environment to improve your prosperity, abundance and wellbeing and Heaven Luck relates to your Chinese Astrology. This blogpost is about how my Chinese Astrology effected me in the month of the Dragon (April), in the Year of the Dragon (2012). Based on my Chinese Astrology chart (Four Pillars of Destiny) Dragons penalize me and I noticed this especially in the month of April. Knowing that this was coming though allowed me to prepare for it as much as possible – hence the importance of knowing your Chinese Astrology and what it means which is why I always recommend to my clients they get a Chinese Astrology Chart completed. At a cost of $149 for a 15 – 20 page report, I think this is extremely good value and even better the information in it is relevant for your lifetime!

The first think I did to prepare for the upcoming month was to ensure all my Feng Shui was in place so I knew that I had 1/3 of my life variables covered. Obviously being a Feng Shui consultant I live in a home with great Feng Shui and every month I tweak it further in line with the monthly energy visiting. I also conducted a Space Clearing ceremony. This is where I banish things I didn’t want (conflict, debt) and invoke the things I do want (harmonious relationships and prosperity). It is important prior to doing a Space Clearing that you get rid of as much clutter as possible. Luckily this coincided with a Council clean up so I cleared out my garage – which also happened to be in the South East where the Grand duke is visiting this year – and a lot of other cupboards so my home felt more energized than usual prior to the Space Clearing. In hindsight, I should have banished sickness and invoked good health as well.

The next thing I did was purchase a rooster to wear at all times. I have these pendants available for $14.99 of all the 12 animal signs. The rooster and the dragon have a loving relationship so by wearing the rooster charm the dragon uses its energy in a loving way to combine with the rooster rather than a negative way in clashing with my dragon. Whilst the penalty isn’t removed, it is lessened which based on all the challenges I had in April I was thankful for.

The third thing I did was try to enhance my human luck – karma. I donated each week to charity through the month, sometimes providing the gift of sight to a person in need through the Fred Hollows foundations, other times through my membership with B1G1 where I helped provide training for a woman in India which will enable her to earn an income and therefore provide for her family. I also ensured I donated blood as this really helps to reduce any penalties.

So, as mentioned, I had many challenges in April namely; less appointments, seeing my dog nearly get hit by a car in front of my eyes – luckily she was OK (I thank the rooster for this), my same dog needing surgery after getting in a fight with my other dog who ripped its ear open (only $300 – I thank the rooster for that too), a flat tyre on my car (only $35 plug needed which I thank the Rooster for), a flat tyre on my husband’s car (new tyre – $250), a major fallout with a close friend, side swiping my 18 month old car and damaging 3 panels (I could still drive it and no one hurt so I thank the rooster for that) and having a major chest infection which meant I could not go to the gym for 3 weeks at the same time as Easter – and all the associated chocolate landed in my lap (thanks to my kids for the 1kg Easter Egg which I have finished) hence some weight gain. My son lost his I-phone and my Blackberry died losing over 100 contact details. Despite all these challenges I was able to find the positive and learnt many lessons in this time as well.

The forced rest and less appointments allowed me to sort out 18 months worth of income and expenditure and enter it into MYOB to enable me to do my tax (and get $3000 tax refund cheque – woo hoo!). Being on top of my MYOB and being vigilant in completing this on a monthly basis will enable me to put in this year’s tax in July and get another $3000 refund. I was also able to take the time to work out how to generate MYOB generated invoices and receipts instead of the usual Word documents I had to create each time for every client which took way too long. I had time to light candles and listen to soothing music, put my feet up and just chill and catch up on all my favourite shows. I rearranged a few rooms in the house and cleared out some old cupboards to give my Feng Shui remedies a permanent home. I also got quite a few of my scrapbooks up to date when I took a weekend away to scrapbook with my girlfriends. I had time to catch up with friends and check in on them to make sure they were OK. I now have an updated phone (still trying to work out how to reinstall Facebook, Twitter and 2 email accounts on it but hey what else is the weekend for.

Most profound though this month was the emotional effect that I felt when a local 38 year old mother was hit and killed by a bus at Beecroft whist carrying her 11 month old baby. Her 11 year old daughter was on the bus. I didn’t know this lady but the effect her death had on me was great. When I heard it on the news whilst driving home at 4pm I immediately hoped it wasn’t my best friend Penny (who is 38 and has an 11 year old daughter) who I knew was likely to be in Beecroft at that time picking her kids up from school. When the report ended with “and her 11 month old baby is OK” I knew it wasn’t Penny and felt very relieved but still felt so terrible that two children had lost their mother so tragically. I drove past the scene and saw the bus and was in tears the rest of the way home (unusual for me as I rarely cry). All night I felt quite down and my thoughts were with the local family who must now try and readjust their life without this family member in it. I wondered if I knew her as I took my children to Beecroft Playgroup 11 years ago when she might have been taking her 11 year old daughter there as well. The next day I went to my normal fortnightly nail appointment at Beecroft and passed the floral tribute on the footpath near where she was killed – so heartbreaking. Everyone at the beautician was talking about it and Beecroft had such a sad feeling about it that day. I visited my best friend Penny that day as I had discovered that she was there at the time of the accident and was one of the people providing assistance at the scene as she has a nursing background. I could only imagine how she must be feeling as I was so deeply affected by this event and I wasn’t involved at all. Obviously she has been affected by this and I wanted to do all I could to help her – Flowers and sushi and an ear were all I could think of. We had a chat about the events and other things that were happening in our lives and I know she appreciated having the company that day. This experience has reminded me of how valuable every second of life is. I always tell my children and husband how much I love them and will continue to do this. Knowing that life can end so quickly is a scary thought so my aim is to ensure that the really important things are done every day and the not so important things can wait. I am really enjoying smelling the roses more too!

The Continuous Learning Journey

February 29, 2012 By Admin 1 Comment

Carolyn McCallum is the Director of Feng Shui Harmony. She holds a Bachelor of Education and a Masters of Education in Health from the University of Sydney. She commenced her study of Feng Shui in 2004 and has been widening her knowledge in both Feng Shui and Chinese Astrology since then. In this article she shares her passion and journey thus far, into the world of Feng Shui and Chinese Metaphysics.

I commenced studying Chinese metaphysics in 2004. Originally I thought a few courses on various aspects like Feng Shui and Chinese Astrology would hold me in good stead to becoming a competent Feng Shui Consultant. I now know that there is an insurmountable amount of information to learn in one lifetime. I believe it is imperative to reinvest in yourself each and every year to ensure you not only maintain your level of competency but grow professionally as well.

I have completed well over a thousand hours of in depth study and my thirst for growing my knowledge is unquenchable. Each book I read, conference I attend, seminar or course I enrol in and networking group I meet with, enables me to tweak the way I complete my consultations and provides my clients with information, solutions and recommendations to assist in them attaining their goals, both personal and professional.

To the new student it is very beneficial to study with many teachers to get a rich palette of experiences and information that you can take components of and use in the way that you most feel fits in with your ideas around the subject. I commenced study in 2004 with Melynda Munro from the Yin Yang School of Feng Shui. The importance of annual visiting energy and the flow of Cosmic Chi was the focus in this initial study. The majority of my foundational knowledge for Compass, Form and Flying Star School was then received when I studied at the Australian College of Environmental Studies (ACES). I undertook the Certificate IV in Feng Shui here, and I believe this is one of the best foundational course offered in Australia. This course included subjects on Creating Sacred Space, Building Biology, Geomancy and Business studies as well as Form, Compass and Flying Star schools of Feng Shui. Through ACES I was introduced to Vic Ketis, Founder of the Australian Academy of Feng Shui who has also been instrumental in my knowledge with both Chinese Astrology and Feng Shui. I’ve studied with Vic over many years and the depth of experience and knowledge he has shared with students like me is quite profound.

Along the way I have also studied with Grand Master Raymond Lo whose knowledge of more complex formulas and structured way of teaching the subject is excellent, especially once you have a good foundational understanding of the Flying Star system. Grand Master Lo also runs fantastic courses on the I Ching and Chinese Astrology and I have found all of his books essential reading and still refer to them regularly.

Jerry King from White Dragon Enterprises is fairly new as a teacher but his focus on hidden elements within earthly branches and the clashes, combines and harmonies of the stems and branches within a Four Pillars chart is extremely useful to understand and apply when conducting an analysis of a client’s Four Pillars Chart.

I have also studied with Master Lillian Too who helped me appreciate the cultural aspect of Feng Shui and the importance of mandalas and remedies that can be used to harness positive energy and harmonise negative energy especially with regard to Compass School. More recently, an area of study which I have wholeheartedly incorporated within my Feng Shui Consultations concerns the placement of fire. Melynda Munro has opened my eyes to the importance of less well known fire formulas and the influence they have within a building, especially as it relates to the individual.

This month I was also lucky enough to learn from the brilliant Howard Choy. The breadth of his knowledge about everything to do with Feng Shui was astounding. He took the class through a detailed analysis of Qi flow as it relates to Business Feng Shui and looking at it from a macro to a micro level. I really appreciated his generosity in sharing his wealth of knowledge with us.

There have been many examples of teachers relaying information that I haven’t been able to grasp and accept. This has included facing directions, squaring off and finding the centre of buildings, following the cosmic flow of Four Pillar charts vs balancing the Four Pillars chart, Southern vs Northern Hemisphere debate and so on and so forth. The best way of dealing with these inner conflicts is to test as much as possible and monitor outcomes accordingly. I don’t automatically discount aspects I disagree with as it is beneficial to know that there are different ways of looking at things and different components may prove useful in specific consultations. Learning about as many approaches to Feng Shui and Chinese Astrology as possible can only be a good (if not somewhat confusing) thing to do.

Another worthwhile endeavour for those starting out is to learn to write and recognise the 12 earthly branches, the 10 heavenly stems and the 5 element theory inside out as these components are simply everywhere and need to be grasped totally to ensure competence in the area of Feng Shui and Chinese Astrology.

My next focus is to learn more about the intricacies of date selection, face reading, Taoism and Eight Mansions theory as I believe knowledge in these areas will assist me to be a better Feng Shui Consultant to my clients.

I am also looking forward to undertaking a Feng Shui Tour in China in the near future to go back to the roots of Feng Shui and see it being implemented in its natural environment. This year I am continuing my learning journey with Vic Ketis, focusing on the Major Arcana Cards of the Tarot which relates to Western Astrology and also with Melynda focusing on additional Feng Shui Formulas.

I am also really looking forward to attending the upcoming IFSA – Australia Chapter Convention in May to be held in Melbourne and learning from the Masters of Feng Shui who are speaking there. I am truly excited to be meeting and learning from Stephen Skinner at the Post Convention Workshop which will focus on the lesser used rings of the Lopan.

I would like to wish all those in the Feng Shui family a prosperous, healthy and happy 2012. I look forward to continuing my learning journey for many years to come and hopefully meet as many of you as possible at an upcoming Conference or seminar in the years ahead.

She holds a Bachelor of Education and a Masters of Education both from the University of Sydney and both focusing on Health.

Carolyn’s focus is to provide her clients with information that will help them make positive changes to their quality of life by improving their environment so it assists rather than hinders their prosperity, abundance and wellbeing. Her success in achieving this outcome for her clients is evident in her Testimonials section on her website. She has been most fortunate to have been taught some rare Fire Formulas by Melynda Munro which offers her clients a profound insight into the importance of fire placement in their homes and businesses.

JANUARY & FEBRUARY 2012 SCHEDULE

OMG – we are officially at the end of February (luckily I had an extra day this year!) and I am just writing my first blog for 2012. I am always busy in January, preparing annual reports for my growing client base however this January and February I conducted more space clearings and feng shui consultations than I have ever done in a two month period. January was made busier as I had a week down the South Coast with my husband and children which is always relaxing followed by a week in Bali with my husband. So January was definitely balanced for me with 2 weeks of holidays and relaxing and 2 weeks of solid work and 12 hour days to get everything completed – hence the late blog post. People must be feeling the change in energy of the Water Dragon. I have helped a few clients choose a better home to live in (renting and buying) with the focus on improving their health and relationships. One of my clients I did a lot of work for in January was someone who I had completed 3 pre-purchase inspections for. It was quite frustrating for these clients as they had found two potential houses to buy but I recommended that they not proceed as the Feng Shui of the homes did not support them. Thankfully they trusted me and as a result they found their dream home in December and moved into it at the end of January. I completed a comprehensive consultation on the home, a space clearing to ensure the energy of the previous occupants was removed and I also completed a geomancy audit on the home to remedy any geopathic stress present. I must admit, I love working long term with clients, whether it is just providing them with an annual update each year or providing them with other services. I feel it is more holistic approach to Feng Shui and really value the continuing relationship I build with all of my clients. What I love most of all is they keep coming back for more which indicates that I am providing them with solutions which actually work for them and they can see brings results. Yes I do sometimes recommend using traditional Chinese remedies however I prefer to work with the materials and colours and furniture placement in the first instance if possible as most Western clients don’t have an affinity to Chinese remedies. The more consultations I do, the more I see the power of Feng Shui and the accuracy of Chinese Astrology. I particularly love seeing new clients and without knowing anything about them (except their birth date) be able to provide them with a summary of how there life has been to date using Chinese Astrology principles. This always blows them away and builds trust from our initial meeting which lasts into the future. In February I have worked on a few businesses (Delicatessan, Office complex and Chiropractic Clinic) and homes (from Matraville, West Pennant Hills to Central Coast) and have completed 12 Chinese Astrology charts this month alone. I have also recently completed an excellent course with Howard Choy which was specifically on Feng Shui and Businesses which focussed on the flow of Qi (energy). I got a lot of valuable information from this course and particularly appreciated Howard’s generosity with his information. I am really looking forward to completing more business consultations this year to better assist businesses achieve prosperity abundance and wellbeing. I have just got off the phone with another client I have been helping look for a home to buy. I’ve completed 2 pre-purchase inspections for her and she just rang to tell me the bid they put in prior to auction has been accepted – she was soooo happy and I am soooo happy for them too. This week I have 6 chinese astrology charts to finalise, a pre-purchase report, real estate selling report, residential consultation and a business consultation (a Cafe restaurant) to complete so I will be very busy indeed. I have just ordered a whole lot of stock from my various suppliers so am looking forward to a busy and productive year ahead. It’s March tomorrow – UNBELIEVABLE!

Recently I was interviewed by Frock, Paper, Scissors – a Brisbane newspaper about Feng Shui tips for the Bedroom. Here is the result!

Bedroom Blues

We all know that sleep is the quintessential to looking beautiful and feeling awesome. But how many of us are getting the recommended amount of sleep to be mentally sharp, emotionally balanced and full of energy every day. Experts in health, psychology and interior design, Dr Eileen Heyne, Carolyn McCallum and James Hue give us the secrets to getting a good night’s sleep.

Doctor Eileen Heyne believes that sleep is vital for the functioning of the body from all points of view, “Without the regular 6-8 hours of sleep one’s health will gradually spiral downwards and you will end up unwell with suppression of the immune system, infections, tiredness and general misery and woes,” she says. According to the latest national MBF Healthwatch Survey, 51% of Australians say they are not getting enough sleep, while 46 % have been trying to get more sleep.

It was found Aussies blamed a range of factors that interfered with their sleep including full schedules, going to bed late, job stress, family issues such as having young children, and poor sleep patterns. However many of us don’t know that we can improve the quality of our sleep by just making a few simple changes to our bedroom.

James Luu, with a degree in psychology and currently studying interior design understands the importance of sleep, “You sleep for about a third of your lifetime,” he says, “so it is quite vital to ensure your bedroom expresses positive sleep vibes, and there are multitudes of ways to create this.” Dr Eileen Heyne agrees, “Creating an environment which is calm and peaceful for your rest period is vital for our physical and mental wellbeing,” she says.

Feng Shui expert Carolyn McCallum explains this concept using the two major aspects of Yin and Yang. Where Yang concerns activity and Yin applies to inactivity. She states that, “obviously bedrooms need to be as Yin as possible to ensure the cell rejuvenation can occur in the most supportive environment possible, bedrooms should be a place of rest and relaxation”.

Hints and tips are as follows:

Keep the bedroom uncluttered – That’s right, the constant pile of clothing on your floor where the only carpet visible is the narrow windy path from door to bed has to go!

Only two activities in the bedroom, sleeping and sex – This means keeping everything else out of your ‘sleeping chamber’ to avoid distraction, this includes eating so goasy on the ‘breakfast in bed’.

Laptops, desktops and TV’s are cast out – the lighting sends out bad non-sleeping signals!

Blinds or shutters – These are more appropriate than curtains as they manage to completely block the sun out! This helps ensure you wake up when you should wake up, rather than from the sun.

Pastel and pale wall colouring – if your walls are covered with fluro green or hot pink paint, its time to strike anew. Keep it personal with pale and pastel colouring, light saturation of colours is key!

Sustainability – Yes it’s that word again! The chemicals you are using in your bedroom is of prime importance to how you sleep. The scent that comes from these products changes your sleep patterns. Go for low VOC (volitale organic compounds), economically friendly and organic chermicals.

The south west corner of the bedroom is the ‘relationship’ corner and a portrait here helps support the couple. Otherwise, if you are single and looking for love, place a pair of mandarin ducks or a picture, painting or sculpture of a happy couple here to increase the likelihood of being lucky in love.

It is best not to sleep with your head next to a clock radio – instead put it on the other side of the room so you can still see it but the electric field it emanates will not harm you.
