Different Schools of Feng Shui
There are different schools of Feng Shui which include;
- Flying Star School
- Form School
- Compass School
- Bagua School
Each have their positive attributes. I use the traditional method which was developed thousands of years ago by the Chinese and used ever since with great success. It is the predominant method used throughout Asia today. It utilises information from Flying Star, Form and Compass schools.
The Bagua school was developed in New York in the 70s and is often found in a lot of Do It Yourself manuals and easy to implement. It doesn’t take into consideration the energy of the house, the age of the building or the location of the home in relation to its compass direction or the forms around it which I think is imperative to achieve the best outcome using Feng Shui principles.
FLYING STAR, FORM AND COMPASS SCHOOL OF FENG SHUI
The more you understand certain principles around Feng Shui, the better equipped you will be to manipulate your environment to improve the energy around you.
Basically there are different kinds of energy used in Feng Shui.
Flying Star School
In Flying Star Feng Shui the two main kinds of energy are mountain energy and water energy.
Mountain energy is activated in quieter areas like the bedroom, seldom used dining room, a garage used for storage for example.
Water energy is activated in more active areas like the main entrance, kitchen, lounge room, family room and the study.
Bathrooms contain both types of energy however the energy located in bathrooms is generally not remedied as due to the purpose of bathrooms – to eliminate waste – the energy here whether positive or negative tends to drain away. It is therefore beneficial to have negative energy located in bathrooms.
To know what energy is located in each area, you will need to engage a Feng Shui specialist who practices Flying Stars to come to your home or business and using a floorplan and knowing the date when the building was built can work out what energy is located in each room. Once they have this information, they can recommend where you should place remedies to harmonise the negative energy and support the positive energy.
For instance, if I find clients who have positive energy at the main door then I recommend they place a water feature at their entrance which will stimulate the positive energy located their. Similarly, I recommend clients harmonise negative energy by the placement of a remedy which could be chinese coins, a windchime or lucky bamboo. The remedy is chosen depending on the area the negative energy is located.
Flying Star Feng Shui, which is the school of Feng Shui practiced by Feng Shui Harmony is quite complex and I have spent many years understanding its complexities. I get a lot of personal satisfaction helping my clients improve their wellbeing by providing them with recommendations based on their building’s Flying Star Chart.
Form School
Form School is to do with analysing the forms outside a building, its contours, mountains, height of surrounding buildings and the placement of any water (like pools, fountains etc). In addition to this, you can use the same analysis within a building by specifically focussing on the placement of furniture.
There are four animals associated with Form School. These include;
- the black tortoise,
- the green dragon,
- the white tiger and
- the red phoenix also known as the Red Bird.
These animals are deemed celestial or heavenly animals and are powerful and important symbols of Form School Feng Shui.
Good Form school is when you have your black tortoise behind you, your green dragon to the left of you (if you are standing at your front door looking out), your white tiger to the right of you (if you are standing at your front door looking out) and you red bird in front of you. However, without understanding what types of things are represented by each animal, this definition doesn’t really help.
Black Tortoise
Your black tortoise is your mountain and in the modern landscape a physical mountain, tall buildings or trees or solid structures located behind your home or business will represent a strong black tortoise. If you have a strong black tortoise it indicates that you have a strong support network from family and important people and are protected to assist with living a long life.
You can tell if you have a strong black tortoise by simply standing in front of the building, whether it be your home or office and see if you can see anything behind it. If you can then that indicates a strong black tortoise, if you can’t then a recommendation that I would make would be for the client to plant fast growing trees which will help improve their black tortoise.
Green Dragon
The Green Dragon is a symbol of good luck. It brings you wealth, protection and abundance of good fortune. As far as our buildings are concerned we want to have forms to the left of our homes and offices (when we stand in our door looking out) which are slightly higher than us. An example of this could be having a two story home to the left of our one storey home. Having a strong green dragon indicates that colleagues are very supportive of our endeavours and also indicates that the building is quite active and its occupants work hard.
White Tiger
The White Tiger is to the right of our building when we stand at the front door. The Tiger needs to be controlled by the Dragon otherwise it could hurt us. That being the case, the White Tiger needs to be lower than the Green Dragon so the neighbour on the right side of your home should be slightly lower than the neighbour on your left. Having a good White Tiger ensures protection for the occupants of the building. If your White Tiger is higher than your Green Dragon then it indicates that you lack support and the occupants of the building could be quite sedentary and lack the motivation to go to work or work hard.
Red Bird
Finally, the Red Phoenix or Red Bird is located to the front of your building. It represents opportunities that bring material benefits. Any blockage at the front of the premises, like a large shrub or wall makes success hard to come by and severe losses may be suffered.
BAGUA SCHOOL

Watch out Roosters, Snakes, Dragons and Ox’s – today’s energy is not supportive so try and lay low. For everyone else, it is a good day to meet friends, sign or end a contract and have a fruitful discussion. Avoid operations today if possible.
